I am an amputee. As a result of a traumatic injury, I lost my lower right leg 32 years ago. I know the importance of a good fitting prosthesis.
Having had some ill-fitting prostheses in my early years as an amputee, I thought the occasional pain and skin breakdown was part of wearing the prosthesis. It was not until I started designing sockets myself that I realized that changing the design of a socket could eliminate the periodic sores and pain.
I am an active amputee able to participate in softball, tennis, basketball, golf, bicycling, jogging, etc. I found that I can be as active as I want with a prosthesis that fits well, hold on well, and functions well. There are various ways that the prosthesis can be attached to a residual limb and there are many components, (i.e. feet, knees, hooks and hands) as well as materials that can be used in making the prosthesis. The suspension, componentry, and materials chosen should be based on the individual needs of the amputee. I feel it is important to educate the amputee about the advantages and disadvantages of products and designs available and for the amputee to be involved in deciding the type of prosthesis that will best fit their needs before it is recommended to their physician.
We make the prosthesis in steps (from casting and measuring to fitting and delivering the prosthesis) and do not go to the next step until both the amputee and myself are satisfied.
We will work with the amputee to ensure that after the amputee takes the prosthesis home, that the prosthesis remains as comfortable and as functional as possible. I have never told a patient “that’s all I can do”.
I received my prosthetic education at Northwestern University and my certification in prosthetics from the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics. I am licensed in prosthetics by the State of Florida. I have 26 years experience in the prosthetic field in Pensacola and have been a resident of Pensacola for 32 years. My wife Cheryl and I started Gilg Prosthetics, Inc. 20 years ago.
